
Flight routes, weather, fuel burn and sustainability – a lot is on pilot Fredrik Karlsson’s mind before take‑off. And at TUI, tackling these issues isn’t just done in the cockpit: some colleagues fly aircraft, others sit in the office and build digital tools – and Fredrik happens to enjoy both.
As a TUI pilot, he makes countless decisions in the cockpit every day that influence how much fuel is used. At the same time, he’s curious about the technology and data behind those decisions. “As a pilot, you’re constantly balancing safety, efficiency and operational constraints,” he says. “And every kilogram of fuel we don’t burn means less CO₂ emissions for that flight.”
That way of thinking motivated Fredrik to go one step further. Alongside his role in the cockpit, he helped co‑develop the TUI Operational Flight Plan App 2.0, translating hands‑on flying experience into a practical digital tool designed to support better decisions in day‑to‑day operations.
Developed by TUI together with pilots like Fredrik, the app’s Cruise Fuel Economy (ECO CRZ) feature supports crews in identifying a fuel-efficient cruise level under the specific conditions of the flight – even when plans change due to weather or air traffic restrictions. By combining aircraft performance data with real‑time conditions, the app provides crews with additional information and supports faster, better-informed decisions.
“For me, this is where it all comes together,” says Fredrik.“When you have the relevant information at the right moment, it becomes much easier to identify a fuel-efficient option among those available. The decision and responsibility for the safe operation of the flight remain with the crew.”
